    Get PDF
A series of balloon flights undertaken to validate data received from the limb infrared monitor of the stratorphere instrument aboard the Nimbus 7 satellite is discussed. Ozone data profiles, which included altitude, pressure, and mixing ratio, obtained during both ascent and descent of the balloons are reported. The measurement concept, instrumental uncertainties, and temporal variations observed for several time periods are discussed

From solidarity to social inclusion: the political transformations of Durkheimianism

Pierre Rosanvallon holds the chair of modern history and contemporary politics at the Collège de France, Paris. In 2004 he published Le Modèle politique français, subtitled ‘La société civile contre le jacobinisme de 1789 à nos jours’[civil society against jacobinism from 1789 to the present]. I begin by summarising and scrutinising Rosanvallon’s account of French political history since the Revolution. This tends towards a critical account of his thesis, seeing it as representative of a partisan political position of the end of the 20th century. In the process of making this argument, I seek to raise questions for further investigation about the historical relations between social scientific analysis, academic philosophy, and the advancement of social movements as subversive of dominant political discourse

    Theory of practice

Inevitably, central to this chapter is Bourdieu’s Outline of a Theory of Practice (Bourdieu, 1977b) which was a translation and revision of Esquisse d’une théorie de la pratique, précédé de trois études d’ethnologie kabyle (Bourdieu, 1972). Before coming to an assessment of the ‘theory’ which Bourdieu advanced in these two texts, however, there is the need to interpret some aspects of his social and intellectual trajectory in the first 40 years of his life (1930-70). This chapter will also consider the importance of Le métier de sociologue (Bourdieu, Chamboredon and Passeron, 1968), translated as The Craft of Sociology (Bourdieu, Chamboredon and Passeron, 1991b) and comment on the relationship between Bourdieu’s thinking and that of Bachelard, Althusser and Habermas amongst others
